Christmas Special Friday

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (1985)

This special begins with the meeting of Immortals called by the Great Ak to decide if Santa Claus should be allowed to become immortal. He tells the story of Santa Claus’s life as he grows up in the mystical forest of Burzee. Claus is raised and educated by the Immortals after being saved from death by the Great Ak. After discovering the unhappiness of other mortals he leaves the forest to help alleviate the suffering of children by making toys. His work for the children of the world draw the attention of the Awgwas who seek to destroy Claus. Adapted from the 1902 novel of the same name by Frank L. Baum The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus was the last stop motion special produced by Rankin Bass.

Poor, misguided folks. They missed the whole point. Lot’s of unhappiness? Maybe so. But doesn’t Santa take a little bit of that unhappiness away? Doesn’t a smile on Christmas morning scratch out a tear cried on a sadder day? Not much maybe. But what would happen if we all tried to be like Santa and learned to give as only he can give: of ourselves, our talents, our love and our hearts? Maybe we could all learn Santa’s beautiful lesson and maybe there would finally be peace on Earth and good will toward men.
